Carl Mathis is a native of Bladen County, North Carolina. He grew up in a small rural community
called Porterville. Carl attended Porterville Elementary School, a small school built by the hands of community volunteers with lumber donated by local black landowners.
He also attended Booker T. Washington High School and graduated from Clarkton High. He is one of eleven children. His mother Inez and father, Dewitt are both deceased.
Carl received a Bachelor of Science in Art / Education from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University of Greensboro, North Carolina. He taught art in
several counties in North Carolina included Bladen and Montgomery. Carl is married and has two children. He is retired from the Wilson County School system in
Wilson, N.C. His styles are folk-art with a religious and architectural base. He deals with the spiritual and emotional struggles of
everyday people. His mediums of choice are pencil, pen and ink, acrylic and water color. |
